Footage from a residential security camera, circulated on social media and acquired by the WSJ, depicts a blue Model 3 racing across a yard and colliding with the front wall of a residence in Katy, Texas.

A man in the Tesla during the accident informed police that he was using the automated driving assistance system. Nonetheless, the vehicle swerved off the road, "crashed into a brick house at great speed," and hit the woman indoors. Marta Avila subsequently passed away due to injuries from the accident.

Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's vice president of artificial intelligence and software (responsible for self-driving car development), remarked that "in this instance, the driver manually disabled the autonomous driving system and completely pressed the accelerator pedal" and kept doing so even after the crash. "During the moment of the collision, the velocity hit 73 mph (118 km/h)," he remarked on the social media platform X.

In the course of the investigation, NHTSA will look into a potential flaw in the Full Self-Driving system, which manages the vehicle's steering and direction functions but necessitates that the driver stays completely attentive to the road. Tesla requires owners to pay a monthly fee of $99 for Full Self-Driving access.
