Internet resource Tech Insider drew up a rating of the world’s most innovative cities based on a research conducted by 2thinknow. Nine analysts considered important factors in technological development, including number of patents and investors in the city’s development of technologies. They investigated 85 cities of the world in total.



10. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam combines financial technologies, energy efficiency and high culture of startups. All of this makes it one of the most innovative cities in Europe, despite the fact that it is smaller in size than many of its neighbors. For example, Amsterdam's population number is equal to only one-third of that of Berlin.

In April, local lawmakers have announced that by 2025, they intend to get rid of gas and diesel cars in favor of electric vehicles. This is one of the most obvious signs that the city is moving towards high technology.

9. Singapore

Singapore boasts with a huge number of developers and investors, who constantly develop the infrastructure and latest technologies. Massachusetts Institute of Technology helped the city construct an "intelligent" transport system, less dependent on private transportation and more - on public transport with a developed system of railways and light rail.

8. Toronto, Canada

The city with an innovative infrastructure is a home for a huge number of start-ups. In total, Toronto hosts 30% of Canadian IT-companies. Most of these companies employ less than 50 people. This means that a small number of young companies in the future will have a huge impact on the country’s development.

In general, the companies in Toronto accounts for approximately $ 52 billion annual profit.

7. Taipei, Taiwan

Analysts 2thinknow note that Taipei is the undisputed leader by the "industrial design" parameter. Many large computer companies, such as ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, and Acer, have chosen the city as a home.

According to 2thinknow’s study, the city received high scores on "venture capital" parameter.

6. Boston, USA

In the last few years, elite institutions such as MIT, Harvard University and others triggered growth of new technologies in Boston. Many of have been made in the field of biotechnology and robotics.

The city hosts huge number of venture capital companies (Battery Ventures, Atlas Venture, Bessemer Venture Partners, Matrix Venture Partners), which invest in innovative start-ups and university laboratories. Moreover, technological giants such as Facebook and Amazon, also have offices and research departments in Boston.

5. Los Angeles, USA

The film industry is not the only sector that is developing in Los Angeles. According to the report of 2014, compiled by LA County Economic Development Corporation, number of hi-tech jobs in Los Angeles is bigger than in any other region of the US. According to the report, the total profits number about $ 58 billion.

4. Seoul, South Korea

Seoul is justly called a city of the future. Innovation are woven into the city’s design in the form of a subway system, superior to that of New York. According to 2thinknow’s report, Seoul issues more patents than any other city in the world does.

3. New York, USA

New York is a craddle of new technologies. According to official data, nearly 7 thousand New York’s IT-companies have provided more than 100 thousand jobs in the III quarter of 2013.

In addition, the city has launched an integrated technology LinkNYC, which is essentially a free Wi-Fi service. Many analysts believe that this is only the beginning.

2. London, UK

After introduction of Crossrail project, London was a real dream city in terms of public transport. By 2018, 10 new railway lines will connect existing 30 stations. The project costs $ 20 billion; this is the largest construction project in Europe.

2thinknow’s analysts point out that London has more startups and programmers than any other city in the world. According to estimates, there are more IT jobs in IT than in California. Some say that in the next decade, this number will increase to 11 thousand.
