Ukrainian charities could get about £987 million from the total £2.35 billion raised from the sale of London football club Chelsea, according to The Times, which is citing experts and reports from companies involved in the deal.

The newspaper reports that around £1.54 billion is set aside to pay back loans and other debts owed to companies linked to Roman Abramovich, the former owner of the club.

Experts interviewed by the newspaper say there are no other ways to clear these debts.

Roman Abramovich, who was ranked 350th in the list of the world's richest people and 20th among Russian billionaires on Forbes, had a net worth of $9.2 billion.

He owned Chelsea from 2003 until 2022. He bought the club for £140 million. In 2022, after he was added to the UK government's sanctions list, the club was sold to a group led by American businessman Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital for £4.25 billion.

Following this, a charitable foundation was created at Abramovich's direction to handle all the money from the sale of Chelsea.

It was planned that £2.5 billion would go to help people affected by the war in Ukraine, while the remaining £1.75 billion would be used for the development of the club. The sale proceeds are kept in a special UK bank account. Although Abramovich doesn't have access to the funds, they still legally belong to him.

In 2022, the British government provided £200,000 for the legal and administrative costs of setting up the fund, but could not reach an agreement to transfer all the money from the sale of Chelsea FC to support Ukraine.
In early June 2025, the UK government announced it was ready to take legal action if Abramovich did not agree to send £2.5 billion to Ukraine.
