The European Union is working on plans to apply sanctions on American companies if US President Donald Trump refuses to support his suggestion to station NATO forces in Greenland, according to a report by the British newspaper The Telegraph, which cited anonymous sources.

As per the sources, the UK is currently discussing with other European allies about sending military forces to Greenland. This would involve placing troops, ships, and military aircraft on the island.

The plan is still in the initial stages of discussion. Its main aim is to protect Greenland from Russia and China, and to secure the Arctic region in line with the interests of US President Donald Trump. European nations hope that by sending NATO troops, they can discourage Trump from pursuing his goal of claiming Greenland. They also intend to highlight benefits for  American taxpayers, as Europe has taken on the majority of the costs for maintaining security in the Atlantic.

Should Trump decide against the deployment of NATO troops in Greenland, European countries may take strong actions—such as imposing sanctions on the United States. The EU restrictions could impact American companies like Meta, Google, Microsoft, and X, as well as American banks and financial institutions, potentially banning them from operating in Europe. Additionally, there are discussions about the possibility of European countries closing down American military bases located on their soil.
