The capital of Thailand, Bangkok, has been renamed Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. This is a short form of the city's full name in Thai, which is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest name for a capital city.

The Royal Thai Academic Council announced the change of the official foreign name of the capital from Bangkok to Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. A statement to this effect is published on the website of the council.

The name Bangkok will remain the capital’s unofficial name. The official Latin spelling will be Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. The decision to rename will take effect when it is approved by a government commission.

The capital's name change is part of a broader reform to bring geographic designations "in line with current realities," according to the Bangkok Post. For example, the national name of Italy's capital Rome will be changed from Rome to Roma, and Myanmar's capital Yangon will be changed from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw.

The new name of the Thai capital, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, is an abbreviation of the full local name of the city, which has made into the Guinness Book of Records as the longest name of the capital.
