Ten EU countries advocate nuclear power because of gas prices

10/11/2021 - 07:14

Government representatives from 10 EU countries have written an article on the importance of developing nuclear energy. They linked the argument to the volatility of gas prices and the fight against climate change.

The article was published by Le Figaro. It was authored by French Finance and Reconstruction Minister Bruno Le Maire, as well as the prime ministers, economy ministers and energy ministers of Croatia, Bulgaria, Finland, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, and Slovenia.

"The rise in energy prices indicates how important it is for us to reduce our energy dependence on foreign countries as quickly as possible. It is clear that energy supply tensions will become more frequent in the future," the article says. It suggests the EU should diversify its sources of supply.

Ten governments believe nuclear power can offer protection against energy price volatility. Natural gas prices are given as an example. Furthermore, the authors see nuclear power as "playing a crucial role in protecting the climate".

Last week, the price of gas reached a historic high of more than $1900 per thousand cubic metres.
