Ashwani Gupta, who held the same position at Mitsubishi Motors Corp., will be the company's chief operating officer. Nissan Vice President Jun Seki will become his deputy. All appointments will take effect no later than January 1, 2020.

Appointments were preceded by careful selection and evaluation of candidates. The board of directors considered Uchida the right person to take the company forward, said board chairman Yasushi Kimura.

Former Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa decided to step down in September.

The new management of the company will have to cope with falling profits, restructure the business and solve the problems associated with the consequences of numerous scandals, including around the former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.
