A hacker attack through SolarWinds software affected the internal networks of the US federal, state and local governments, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said.

The authority urged organisations to prioritise action to identify and resolve the threat.

In addition to government agencies, the attack through SolarWinds affected "critical infrastructure and other private sector entities," the agency said on its website.

Media and cybersecurity companies reported the attack in mid-December, with US intelligence agencies later confirming the information.

The Washington Post claimed that Cozy Bear hackers were behind the hack, which, according to the newspaper, worked for Russian intelligence services. US Justice Secretary William Barr and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have both admitted that Russia was behind the attack.

President Donald Trump, however, believes that reports of the hacking have been exaggerated by the media and that Russia is always mentioned when "something happens".
