Shigeru Ishiba has announced his decision to resign as Japan's prime minister and head of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), stating that he delayed this move due to the necessity of addressing the issue with US tariffs.

“Who would genuinely engage in negotiations with a government that has seen its leader step down?” Ishiba said during a press conference on Sunday.

The departing prime minister stated that he had intended for some time to take accountability for his party's loss in the July elections, but was committed to first securing a win in trade negotiations with the US. Ishiba referred to the situation as “a national interest issue.”

Ishiba stated that he decided to resign on Friday when US President Donald Trump mandated a decrease in trade tariffs on Japanese vehicles and other products from 25% to 15%.

On Sunday morning, Japanese broadcaster NHK revealed that the prime minister chose to resign to prevent a division within the ruling LDP party.

The coalition led by the LDP under Ishiba lost its majority in the upper house of parliament during the elections in July.
