The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the emergence of new COVID-19 strains could jeopardize the global recovery. This was revealed by IMF Chief Economist Gita Gopinath during an online conference hosted by the International Financial Forum last weekend.

Ms. Gopinath stated that the IMF's previous predictions had downside risks. She believes that the proliferation of the Omicron strain will heighten those dangers.

In addition, the IMF chief economist did not rule out the emergence of new, even more aggressive strains.

Earlier cases of infection with the omicron strain were identified in Hong Kong and a number of African countries, later cases of infection were recorded in Australia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, Israel, Portugal, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, the UK and other countries.
