According to Ulrich Kelber, the federal commissioner for data protection and freedom of information, it is "possible in theory" to temporarily ban the artificial intelligence-based chatbot ChatGPT in Germany over worries about security of personal data.

He claimed that his office asked Italy for more details regarding the ban introduced in the country. Relevant government organizations and media outlets will then be informed of this information, Kelber continued.

Actions of the Italian authorities are being carefully watched, according to the German Interior Ministry. According to Handelsblatt, the ban may be necessary to address a breach of the GDPR, which governs data protection in all of Europe.

According to the newspaper, Volker Wissing, the department head for the Ministry of Digital Technology, opposed the blocking and noted that Germany needs tools to ensure compliance with democracy and openness, rather than a prohibition on artificial intelligence.
