Of the top 5 richest Americans, Bill Gates was the least affected - his capital decreased by 0,2% or $ 210 million. In total, the wealth of the five richest Americans declined by $ 6.4 billion.

The fall in the markets was caused by news from the US Congress, CNBC said. Shortly before stock exchanges closed, several media outlets, including CNBC, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Washington Post, citing sources, said that Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi was getting ready to announce a formal investigation to begin impeachment of the US president Donald Trump.

Pelosi later officially confirmed that the procedure was started. The investigation is aimed to find out whether Trump really asked for the help of a foreign state (Ukraine) to undermine the campaign of former vice president Joe Biden. According to surveys, the latter is leading among democratic candidates for the presidential election in 2020.
