As per the legislation, sales of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the spot market will be prohibited once the regulation takes effect in early 2026, and imports of pipeline gas will gradually be eliminated by September 30, 2027.

Moreover, MEPs demanded more stringent criteria for temporarily lifting the prohibition on gas imports from Russia—this is stipulated for emergency instances concerning the EU's energy security.
To eliminate loopholes and lessen the chance of evasion, operators must submit data to customs authorities verifying the gas's country of origin prior to importing or storing it.
