“Our industry will continue to require gas for the years ahead. This is a fact, and we are considering it as we work to diversify our supply sources,” Itkonen stated during a briefing in Brussels on Monday, adding that Algeria is one of the EU’s most significant partners.
She was asked about how the European Commission manages to align a long-term project involving investments in fossil fuels with its pledge to stop using fossil fuels and importing them from other countries. The spokesperson was also questioned regarding the details of the project that was being discussed.
During her visit to Algeria, European Commissioner Jørgensen stated that “political agreements have been reached.” Itkonen mentioned that details like cost, timing, and schedule are still being finalized by European Commission experts along with their Algerian counterparts. However, she did not provide any specific information about the project.
“Our strategy for diversification in the gas and oil sectors serves as the foundation for the transition towards clean energy. We are committed to a highly transparent and open approach: our industry still relies on the use of gas and fossil fuels. This situation will continue to hold true for a while. When such imports are required, we think it is crucial to have a wide range of suppliers available. And Algeria will play its role in this,” Itkonen concluded.
Earlier, Jørgensen mentioned that the European Union is becoming more worried about its growing reliance on American liquefied natural gas.
