EU company bankruptcies grow by 5.7% in Q2

The EU Statistics Office reported that the number of bankrupt firms in the European Union rose by 5.7% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the prior three months.

The largest rise in the count of bankrupt firms happened in the education and social activities (+21.1%), transportation (+11.4%), and finance (+6.8%) industries. A decline was observed in the hotel and catering industry (-2.6%), construction (-1.7%), and retail (-1.2%).

In the EU, business registrations fell by 0.5% between April and June. The most significant decrease was noted in manufacturing, dropping 3.6%. The information and communications sector, nonetheless, experienced the largest rise, increasing by 8.8%.

In the eurozone, bankrupt companies rose by 6.9% in the second quarter, whereas business registrations declined by 0.1%.
