"In view of the situation in Venezuela, the Council of the EU today decided, as an exception, to extend the restrictive measures against Venezuela for six months instead of a year, i.e. until May 14, 2024," the statement from the Council reads.
"The EU Council is ready to take steps to relax or lift the restrictive measures depending on developments in the situation and the implementation of this political agreement, as well as progress on the unconditional release of all those who have been illegally detained, respect for freedom of expression, including for members of the media, ensuring the independence of the electoral process and judicial institutions to hold credible, inclusive, transparent and democratic elections, and respect for human and political rights," the Council stated.
A travel ban, a weapons embargo, and an asset freeze on specific Venezuelan officials are among of the stringent measures imposed by the EU.
