EC will discuss granting Ukraine EU candidate country status on June 17

The European Commission will discuss granting Ukraine the status of EU candidate nation on June 17 in order to prepare for the Union's summit on June 23-24, stated Eric Mamer, the agency's official.

On June 13, the Committee of European Commissioners will host a general debate on the topic, according to Mamer. At a meeting scheduled for Friday, June 17, the institution is expected to reach a consensus.

The heads of the European Parliament's factions have urged participants at the EU's June 23-24 summit to provide candidate-country status to Ukraine and Moldova, as well as to work out a candidate-country status for Georgia.

MEPs have urged for awarding "candidate status to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova in accordance with Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union... and to work on granting such a status to Georgia," according to the statement.
