Charles Michel, the head of the European Council, urged the EU to act quickly to create a energy union, which would be a crucial tenet of EU sovereignty.

"Realizing an energy unity is crucial right now. This will serve as a crucial tenet of EU sovereignty. No nation can handle a catastrophe of this magnitude alone, as we experienced during COVID, particularly with vaccines," the statement reads.

It stated that nations must be ready to confront the taboos related to the EU's national powers and competencies.

"We must make the 27 national energy systems compatible so that a viable energy union may be created. Strong and real coordination between member states would be necessary for this "added Michel.

The EU will also need to establish a legal framework and market conditions for such a union, he continued. The decrease of energy consumption, supply security, and price reduction should be among the four objectives of the EU's single energy strategy, according to Michel.
