Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission (EC), stated that the international community needs to expedite the phase-out of coal in order to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

"It has been two years since the world community decided to expedite the phase-out of coal at the COP 26 conference in Glasgow. However, maintaining coal in the global energy mix continues to be our biggest issue," she stated on Saturday during the Coal Accelerator initiative's launch at the UN climate conference in Dubai (COP 28).

"One thing is certain: if we are to hit the 1.5 degree Celsius temperature target established by the Paris Agreement, the phase-out of coal must happen faster. Additionally, everyone must benefit equally from this shift," von der Leyen stated.

She pointed out that the EU is implementing this widely advocated strategy, with ten of its members having completely stopped using coal. By 2030, ten more nations will gradually phase out the fuel. The other seven states in the union will try to follow suit.

She emphasized that the EU is also aware that partner states must join and that this movement needs to be global.
