Amazon plans to hire 55,000 new employees in the coming months, in addition to last year's massive hiring spree, and in this case we are talking about office workers and technology specialists.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told Reuters about this in an interview Wednesday, his first big interview since taking the post in July. Amazon plans to hire about 40,000 employees in the U.S., 2,500 in the U.K., and the remaining 12,500 in other countries, mostly Germany, Japan and India.

As Reuters notes, that number of new hires is equivalent to about one-third of Google's total workforce or almost all of Facebook's. For Amazon itself, it is an increase in office and technology staff by 20%, from the current 275,000. Mr. Jassy said that such mass hiring is necessary for the company to keep up with competitors in retail, cloud technology, advertising, and to develop areas such as satellite launches (Project Kupier, launched in 2019).

Last year, Amazon, whose demand for its services increased as the pandemic began, had already hired about 500,000 new employees. However, at that time it was mostly low-skilled workers in warehouses, delivery, etc.
