EC President warns of possible problems with Middle Eastern migrants for Europe

10/18/2023 - 07:24

The European Council President, Charles Michel, stated that European leaders talked about the potentially dangerous effects of events in the Middle East on migration on Tuesday.

"It is evident that the situation in the region might have extremely catastrophic repercussions for a country like Egypt, which is presently housing millions of migrants. Furthermore, it might directly affect us in Europe," Michel stated at a press conference in Brussels subsequent to a video conference of European leaders discussing the Israeli-Palestinian crisis.

"Therefore, in order to create a wide collaboration with this country, especially in terms of migration, it is vital to communicate with Egypt—it is just an example, but an important one,” President of the European Council stated.

Simultaneously, he pointed out that a great deal of work has been done on the migration issue in the EU recently, especially at the level of the European Council. EU members aimed to demonstrate solidarity with the "front line" nations—Italy in particular—that are under the most pressure from migration.
