The Italian Interior Ministry has mandated a one-month suspension of the Schengen Agreement with Spain and the reinstatement of controls at ports and airports because of the migrant situation in Ceuta.

The checks will be specific, mainly focusing on third-country nationals to confirm they possess all required documents.

Italy originally planned to fully shut its border with Spain, but this would have triggered a severe crisis during the peak of the summer tourism season, the newspaper notes.

In late July, Ceuta, a Spanish exclave located in North Africa, saw a significant surge of migrants arriving from Morocco.
