The number of people infected with the COVID-19 in the world may amount to 10% of the world's population, said Michael Ryan, Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Health Emergency Program. In total, more than 7.8 billion people live in the world

"Current estimates tell us that about 10 percent of the world's population may have been infected with the virus... There are variations by country, urban and rural areas, and variations by different groups," Mr. Ryan told reporters.

The WHO representative added that the remaining 90% of the population has the risk of getting infected. "That means the vast majority of the world's population is at risk... We know the pandemic will continue to evolve. But we also know that at the moment we have working tools to suppress transmission and save lives," he said.

According to Johns Hopkins University, over 35 million people have been identified as infected worldwide. The number of lethal cases has exceeded 1 million. More than 173 thousand new cases were registered during the last day, the day before - more than 319 thousand.

The authorities of some countries are reintroducing restrictive measures against the background of new growth in the number of infected people. Israel was the first to return the full quarantine. Slovenia and the Czech Republic introduced an emergency regime. Spanish authorities have restricted entry and exit to Madrid.
