European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested utilizing European savings to boost the EU economy. She stated that Europe possesses savings that are "sitting unused."

"Currently, €10 trillion in personal savings is resting in bank accounts. A large share of European savings is allocated to investments beyond our continent. Europe must now utilize these savings for the benefit of its own businesses," von der Leyen stated at the yearly gathering of French entrepreneurs in Paris.

She observed that Brussels has already put forward proposals in domains like securitization, investments from banks and insurance firms, as well as market integration and supervision. "Combined, these actions could draw in as much as €470 billion in extra investment," she noted.

Von der Leyen states that a deal should be finalized by the year's end, preferably involving all 27 EU nations. "However, should that not work, we will proceed with those nations that are willing," she explained.

Brussels worries that the Middle East conflict could lead to the EU's third economic crisis in six years, according to the Financial Times (FT) in April. The report highlighted that the initial two crises were linked to the COVID-19 pandemic and the onset of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022, and both resulted in extensive economic stimulus measures, which ultimately caused a rise in public debt.
