Universal demands that streaming sites not allow AI training on its music

The FT learned that the music publisher Universal Music Group requested that Spotify and Apple Music do not permit artificial intelligence training based on its copyrighted music.

Universal Music Group (UMG), one of the biggest music labels in the world, has demanded that streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music restrict access for artificial intelligence to copyrighted music and lyrics, reports The Financial Times referring to emails from UMG.

UMG is requesting that developers who utilize songs and lyrics to train algorithms that may produce music resembling that of well-known artists be denied access to its repertoire. According to a source familiar with the matter, UMG is submitting requests "left and right" to have songs produced by artificial intelligence removed. A

A corporate spokesperson said that Universal Media Group has a "moral and commercial responsibility" to musicians to stop the unlawful use of their music and to keep content off of its platforms that infringes on the rights of musicians and other producers.
