The American company Universal Health Services, which operates about 400 medical facilities, fell victim to a massive cyberattack over the weekend, according to NBC News, citing sources. It can be one of the largest cyberattacks against the US medical system.

According to the channel, computers began to fail over the weekend at various Universal Health Services facilities. Doctors had to write all medical records with pen and paper, and access to the drug database was not possible.

One of the sources of NBC News believes that the purpose of the cyberattack was extortion: hackers demanded payment in order to unlock the computers they had compromised.

Universal Health Services did not respond to the channel's requests for comment on the cyberattack, but posted a statement on its website that its corporate network "is currently down due to information security concerns."

Universal Health Services has facilities in the UK other than the United States. It employs about 90 thousand employees.
