The newspaper reports that the call between Trump and Maduro occurred last week. As per sources from the WSJ, the two parties also talked about Venezuela's request for amnesty for Maduro, his top officials, and their relatives, a group that faces sanctions and criminal accusations from the United States.

Earlier, The New York Times (NYT) covered the dialogue between the presidents of the US and Venezuela. The newspaper's sources indicate that during the conversation held late last week, a potential meeting between Trump and Maduro in the United States was mentioned. One source indicated that no meeting of this nature is scheduled at the moment. The NYT reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also involved in the discussion.

Days following the dialogue, on November 24, the United States labeled the Venezuelan Cartel de los Soles (Cartel of the Suns) as a terrorist organization for its supposed involvement in trafficking illegal drugs into the United States.

The Trump administration has charged Maduro with heading the Cartel de los Soles, a claim he refutes. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Iván Gil Pinto claimed that labeling a "non-existent" drug cartel as a terrorist group aimed to legitimize the US's unlawful interference in Venezuela.
