Additional restrictions will be imposed on the import of Cuban cigars and alcoholic beverages into the United States. In addition, American tourists will be prohibited from staying in hotels and other facilities owned by the Cuban government while traveling.

Donald Trump announced this at a ceremony honoring veterans of the Bay of Pigs landings, as well as the 40th anniversary of the 1980 mass exodus of Cubans from Mariel Bay to the United States, as "part of the ongoing struggle against communist oppression."

Unlike his predecessor Barack Obama, Donald Trump regularly tightens sanctions on Cuba. In 2017, the US authorities announced the withdrawal of 60% of their diplomatic personnel from Cuba and the termination of the issuance of US entry visas on the island.

In April 2019, the US Department of State authorized the filing of lawsuits in the United States against international companies doing business in Cuba, and in June 2019, the United States restricted group travel to Cuba for its citizens.
