SoftBank launches battery manufacturing business in Japan

Japanese conglomerate SoftBank Group is initiating a battery production venture in response to the surging electricity demand driven by the global AI boom.

The telecommunications division of SoftBank Corp. revealed on Monday its plans to start producing battery and energy storage systems for the Japanese market in collaboration with South Korean battery manufacturer Cosmos Lab and AI firm DeltaX Co.

The production of batteries and solar panels will take place at SoftBank's site in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture. The location will additionally include a significant data center for AI applications and a plant for producing AI infrastructure devices.

The production of batteries is anticipated to start in the upcoming fiscal year (concluding in March 2028). SoftBank reports that the facility will commence mass production in a year.

The firm intends to utilize these batteries to energize its AI data centers, as well as electrical grids and industrial ventures in Japan. In the medium term, it might start exporting batteries overseas.
