The gunfire took place at approximately 3:30 PM on Monday close to the National Mall, outside the White House grounds.

The US Secret Service reports that the suspect and a passerby were injured in the gunfire exchange. The shooter was transported to the hospital. The bystander received injuries that are not life-threatening and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

The event led to a quick evacuation of the North Lawn at the White House. The reason behind the shooting is being investigated.

ABC News quoted Matt Quinn, Deputy Director of the Secret Service, stating, “I don't know if this was aimed at the president or not, but we'll uncover the truth.”

The shooting took place over a week following another shooting. On the evening of April 26, 31-year-old Cole Allen from California discharged a firearm at a hotel in Washington, D.C., during a dinner that recognized media professionals. The event was joined by US President Donald Trump, his spouse, and many officials from the US administration.

The assailant claimed that his objective was officials of the White House, though he did not explicitly name Trump.
