Scientists identify cause of blood clots after AstraZeneca and J&J vaccines

A group of German scientists said they established the cause of blood clots in some cases following the administration of coronavirus vaccines from AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson. They have also established what needs to be done to eliminate the possibility of thrombosis.

The results of their study are published on Research Square, but have not yet been discussed by the international scientific community.

According to the scientists from Goethe University Frankfurt and the University of Ulm, the key to the problem lies in adenoviral vectors that are used to deliver the spike protein of the Sars-Cov-2 virus into the human body.

According to the head of the research team, Professor Rolf Marschaleck, the spike protein is not sent to the cellular fluid, where the coronavirus normally produces proteins, but to the cell nucleus. As a result, parts of the spike protein are cleaved and create mutations that cannot bind to the cell membrane where the immunisation process takes place. The mutant proteins are then excreted by the cells into the body, causing the clot to form. Pfizer and Moderna vaccines deliver the genetic material of the adhesion protein into the cellular fluid rather than into the nucleus, and no clot formation is seen after administration of these vaccines.

In Europe, of the 16 million people who received the AstraZeneca vaccine, at least 142 people developed blood clots. In the UK, out of 33 million people vaccinated with the vaccine, clots were found in 309 people and 56 of them died.

In their study, the scientists proposed to alter the sequencing of the adhesion protein and thus prevent its cleavage. According to the Financial Times, Johnson & Johnson has already contacted Rolf Marschaleck's lab for advice on adapting its vaccine.
