South Korean company Samsung Electronics has taken the top place for the past two years in terms of the total number of patents acquired in the US.

Analytical firm IFI Claims Patent Services analyzed the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office data, and placed Qualcomm Inc. on the second place and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) on the third.

After dominating the list for almost thirty years until 2022, IBM Corp. fell to fourth position in 2023.

In total, the number of patents granted in the United States in 2022 decreased by 3.4% to 312,095, the lowest amount since 2019. A record 418,111 patent applications were filed, a small rise over the previous year.

In 2023, American corporations received slightly less than half of all patent awards; Japanese companies received the remaining 12.5%. The third, fourth, and fifth biggest shares of issued patents were held by corporations based in South Korea, China, and Germany.

For the second year running, the area of autonomous driving technology saw the fastest growth in the number of patents granted. Technologies related to breathing masks, electronic cigarettes, drilling, and quantum computing were among other rapidly expanding fields.
