The airline stated that this "constitutes the biggest aircraft order ever made by SAS, totaling over $10 billion in list price."

The airline noted that this investment marks the largest modernization of the SAS fleet in years, providing considerable enhancements in fuel efficiency, noise reduction, and customer service.

SAS was established in 1946 by the unification of the national airlines from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The airline faced financial challenges from competition with budget airlines and reduced travel demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Two years prior, SAS came out of bankruptcy, restructuring its debt exceeding $2 billion.

In 2025, SAS reported an operating profit of 3 billion Swedish kronor ($308.5 million), in contrast to a loss of 2.1 billion kronor in the previous year.

The airline intends to considerably enlarge its primary hub, Copenhagen Airport, by 2030, generating around 25,000 jobs and adding 25 billion Danish kroner ($3.8 billion) to the Danish budget.
