Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced that Budapest will suspend gas supplies to Kyiv until oil transit through Ukraine via the Druzhba pipeline is resumed. "As long as Ukraine does not supply oil, it will not receive gas from Hungary," he wrote on Facebook.

Orban said that Hungary needs to make sure its energy security is safe and that gasoline prices should stay at a protected level and also be lower.

The decision was made during a Hungarian government meeting, said Orban. He said that the extra gas available will help fill the country's gas storage more, which is "especially important for making sure there's enough gas available in the near future."

Until recently, Ukraine not only transferred Russian gas to Hungary but also got some of it from Hungary through the pipeline in the opposite direction. According to data from the Ukrainian consulting company ExPro, as reported by the Associated Press, Hungary made up 45% of Kyiv's total gas imports in 2025, which was more than 2.9 billion cubic meters. By January, this figure had dropped to 38% (266 million cubic meters per month).
