According to Bloomberg, citing sources, US AI firm OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT, has reached a deal to acquire Exafunction Inc. for approximately $3 billion.

Exafunction is the creator of Windsurf (previously known as Codeium), an AI-based programming tool.

As per the sources from the agency, the agreement has not been finalized yet.

Exafunction recently engaged in discussions to secure funding at a $3 billion valuation from backers, including venture firms Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst. In last year's funding round led by General Catalyst, it was appraised at $1.25 billion.

Furthermore, OpenAI has revealed intentions to invest in developing AI infrastructure beyond the US.

On May 7, the organization introduced the OpenAI for Countries initiative, through which it will collaborate with countries in sectors like constructing data centers. It will additionally assist them in tailoring OpenAI products for particular languages and regional requirements - the firm’s leader Sam Altman refers to this strategy as commercial diplomacy.

The partners will fund the collaboration themselves. Initially, OpenAI intends to undertake ten global projects, but it does not share their locations. The firm stated that it aims to collaborate with nations where its technologies are applied in supportive ways for democracy, Bloomberg observes.
