Finnish telecom equipment manufacturer Nokia intends to shut down nearly all of its factories in mainland China by year’s end, as reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), citing sources.

Reports indicate that the firm plans to terminate the majority of its staff in the nation. By the conclusion of 2025, Nokia had around 7,200 employees in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

A Nokia spokesperson mentioned that the firm's performance in China has been falling in recent years and it intends to modify its activities in that region. The firm did not offer additional information.

The Financial Times reported last year, referencing sources, that China is limiting the use of technology from Finland's Nokia and Sweden's Ericsson in telecom networks. In particular, state-owned enterprises acquiring equipment, such as mobile operators, are required to provide contracts with these firms to China's Cybersecurity Administration for evaluation concerning national security.

The review process may extend to three months or longer, and even with a favorable outcome, European players face disadvantages against their Chinese rivals.
