Monte Paschi CEO considers acquiring Banco BPM and Banca Generali

Luigi Lovaglio, CEO of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA, is contemplating the acquisition of two smaller Italian banks, Banco BPM and Banca Generali, as reported by Il Sole 24 Ore, referencing sources.

They anticipate that the agreements will be executed via a share exchange. Lovaglio, who continued leading the world's oldest functioning bank following a tense confrontation with the board of directors, has not yet informed the board about the potential transactions, according to sources from the publication.

Intesa has expressed interest in Monte Paschi, making a €36 billion offer for it in June.

Monte Paschi and Banco BPM, the fourth-largest bank in Italy, have engaged in talks regarding a potential merger, but discussions concluded without an outcome because of concerns about the deal's viability from Credit Agricole of France, which is BPM's biggest shareholder.
