Yoshihide Suga, the new leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, is set to take over as Japanese Prime Minister on Wednesday.

The parliament is expected to formally elect Suga as Prime Minister at an extraordinary session this afternoon.

After that, he is expected to form a new cabinet.

According to media reports, Finance Minister Taro Aso and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, and some other cabinet members who worked under Abe, will retain their posts in the new government. Defense Minister Taro Kono can be made responsible for administrative reform. Health Minister Katsunobu Kato is likely to succeed Suga as chief secretary of the cabinet.

On August 28, Japanese Prime Minister Abe announced his intention to step down due to health problems. Then he noted that he would continue to lead the country's government until his successor was determined. Abe's successor will serve as prime minister until the end of his term - until the next parliamentary elections, scheduled for fall 2021.
