In view of the conflict in Ukraine, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Bank have issued a joint statement urging the international community to take immediate steps to ensure food security.

"Worsening crises are shaking the planet. The war in Ukraine is exacerbating the COVID-19 pandemic, which is now in its third year, while climate change, rising instability, and wars throughout the world are wreaking havoc on people everywhere" the statement follows.

Sharp increases in the price of essential foods and disruptions in the delivery of products, according to the document, are "driving millions of people into poverty."

"We thus call on the international community to take immediate and concerted action to assist vulnerable nations, beginning with the release of emergency food supplies, financial assistance, increased agricultural production, and open commerce," the organizations stated.
