The 0.7nm process enables around 100 billion transistors to be fitted onto a chip the size of a fingernail: twice as many as IBM’s chips made with the 2nm process unveiled in 2021. The new chip is anticipated to be 1.5 times stronger and 1.7 times more energy efficient compared to its earlier versions.
This advancement was enabled by a novel "nano-stack" transistor design, which facilitates increased transistor density on a chip via three-dimensional sequential integration.
IBM anticipates starting chip production with the new technology in the upcoming five years.
