Heineken has named Rafael Oliveira, the CEO of coffee firm JDE Peet's, as its first-ever CEO, according to the Financial Times.

This marks the first instance in the history of the Dutch brewery where an external director has been named CEO. Additionally, there has been only one occasion in Heineken's history when a non-Dutch national has been its CEO.

Heineken's board of directors made the decision due to falling beer demand and shareholder pressure to select a "fresh-minded" leader. The publication reported that the Dutch brewer has recently faced challenges due to rising inflation and decreasing alcohol consumption, especially among younger demographics.

Heineken's former CEO, Dolf van den Brink, departed from the company in May this year, earlier than planned, leaving two internal candidates to succeed him. Nonetheless, the board of directors concluded that neither was prepared for the CEO position, a source close to the matter told the FT.

The report highlighted that JDE Peet's CEO Oliveira has extensive experience in the consumer goods sector. He was originally anticipated to head the new coffee powerhouse Global Coffee Co., formed after JDE Peet's purchased beverage company Keurig Dr Pepper in a €16 billion agreement. Earlier, Oliveira led global markets at Kraft Heinz, as reported by the FT.
