American car manufacturer General Motors intends to transition its heavy-duty pickup factory in Michigan to six-day shifts beginning in June due to heightened demand for these vehicles, the company stated.

The facility that manufactures Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks currently runs three shifts, five days each week. A United Auto Workers representative informed The Wall Street Journal that it manufactures approximately 1,100 vehicles daily.

GM manufactures Silverado pickups featuring high-performance engines at a facility in Canada. However, due to the implementation of import tariffs in the United States, the company is optimizing production within the U.S.

A GM spokesperson claimed that boosting production in Michigan will not impact assembly levels at the Canadian facility.

The Wall Street Journal reports that dealerships are not yet noticing any decrease in vehicle demand despite the recent increase in fuel prices. Gas prices in the United States have risen by one-third since the onset of the military conflict in the Middle East.
