The Financial Times reports that the trade deal announced on Sunday between the US and the EU has “created confusion” in Brussels and Paris regarding which goods might be exempt from the new US tariffs.
The EU sources from the FT mentioned that discussions between Brussels and Washington are presently taking place, including regarding the matter of exempting alcoholic drinks from the tariffed goods list.
US officials stated that there will be no exceptions for spirits and wines, such as champagne, according to the newspaper.
As per another source, the parties have succeeded in progressing on the matter of removing strong alcoholic drinks from the list, while discussions about wines continue.
The FT notes that approximately 30% of alcoholic products exported from France are sent to the United States. Italy backed France's initiative to secure an exception for wines, highlighting that it is the second EU country in alcohol export volumes.
