On July 21, the legislation received approval from both chambers of parliament—the Senate and the National Assembly. Kids under 15 will not be permitted to set up social media accounts beginning September 1, 2026. Platforms will have an additional four months to deactivate current accounts of users younger than 15 by January 1, 2027.
Social media networks must also establish age verification systems sanctioned by the French data privacy authority. This initiative was earlier endorsed by French President Emmanuel Macron. Reuters reports that the European Commission is in the process of developing regulations to limit social media usage among youth throughout Europe.
Australia was the first nation globally to prohibit social media for individuals under 16. The nation implemented the limitation in December 2025. Comparable limitations for adolescents were subsequently declared in Spain, Indonesia, the UAE, Azerbaijan, the UK, and various other nations.
