German carmaker Volkswagen said it reached an agreement with former CEO Martin Winterkorn and three other former top executives on the issue of compensation for the "dieselgate". In total, VW will receive €288 million from them.

Most of the amount - €270 million - will be paid by the company that insured the top managers' liability for possible harm in the performance of their activities.

Mr. Winterkorn will pay €11.2m, former Audi chairman Rupert Stadler - €4.1m, former Porsche board member Wolfgang Hatz - €1.5m and former Audi board member Stefan Knirsch - €1m. The agreement has yet to be approved by a general meeting of VW shareholders, to be held on July 22.

Mr. Winterkorn was at the helm of VW during the scandal over the company's falsification of emissions data for diesel cars, which broke out in 2015. He stepped down a week after the scandal began.

VW's current management felt that Mr. Winterkorn and some other top executives breached their duty of care to safeguard the company's interests - among other things failing to conduct a timely review of those breaches - and demanded compensation for their damages. Dieselgate cost VW more than €32bn in fines, compensation and legal fees.
