The former media leader was accused of working with foreign entities to weaken national security and of planning to share content considered to be inciteful. Government-appointed judges decided not to apply the maximum penalty for Lai in these cases, and therefore did not sentence him to life imprisonment. However, considering Lai's age, the new sentence could effectively amount to life imprisonment.

His accomplices were given prison terms that ranged from 6 years and 3 months up to 10 years. His defense intends to appeal the sentence.

Lai is a vocal opponent of Chinese policies. He was arrested in February 2020 for taking part in unauthorized gatherings and issuing threats. He was allowed to go free on bail at that time. He was arrested in August 2020.
