Ford announced that it will be laying off workers who make the electric pickup vehicles, known as the F-150 Lightning. Approximately 1,400 employees will be impacted by the decision, which has to do with the curtailment of manufacturing for this particular kind of electric car.

Ford plans to reduce the number of workers engaged in the F-150 Lightning electric pickup vehicle production, according to a statement from the company cited by Bloomberg.

Ford has decided to cut the number of shifts at the Rouge electric vehicle plant, where the pickups are manufactured, to just one, effective April 1. The company’s paper details how around 1,400 employees will be impacted by this process. According to Bloomberg, this is happening as interest in electric cars is waning.

Ford also announced that 1,600 new jobs will be created at its Michigan assembly facility to construct the Bronco and Bronco Raptor SUVs as well as the Ranger and Ranger Raptor pickup trucks. The business intends to shift 700 workers from the Rouge complex and hire roughly 900 new hires in order to do this. Other employees would be able to "take advantage of a special retirement incentive program agreed to in the Ford-UAW 2023 contract," the business announced at the same time.

According to Ford, output is being balanced to satisfy consumer demand. Nevertheless, Bloomberg writes, Ford CEO Jim Farley stated that the business still believes electric cars have a "bright future," but only for "specific customers."
