The FT cites a farmer who grew crops on a 7.5-hectare area in an important farming zone in central Cuba. He is currently offering it for $8,000, after previously lowering the price from $9,500.
Without fuel, it is unfeasible to operate not only the equipment for tilling fields, planting, gathering, and irrigation systems, but also to transport goods to consumers.
Certain crops have been ruined, and the harvest is spoiling in the fields since it cannot be moved. According to the newspaper, certain farmers are selling their hand-selected produce to restaurants, yet the payment from these restaurants is so minimal that it hardly meets their essential costs.
According to the FT, only two oil tankers have arrived in Cuba since the start of the year because of the energy blockade. In January, Mexico supplied around 85,000 barrels of oil, and by the end of March, a Russian tanker brought in 700,000 to 730,000 barrels. The fuel generated from these reserves has been depleted long ago.
