The European Union is becoming more worried about its growing reliance on American liquefied natural gas, particularly after US President Donald Trump threatened to take control of Greenland, according to EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen, as reported by Bloomberg.

He stated, “I am certainly hearing this in my conversations with energy ministers and heads of state from throughout Europe — there is a growing concern.”

He mentioned that recent developments have served as a “wake-up call” for the EU, which currently depends on the United States for over half of its liquefied natural gas supplies. The European Union is currently looking into the possibility of boosting supply sources from Canada, Qatar, and nations in North Africa.

Jorgensen mentioned that they are currently discussing potential agreements with various countries capable of supplying liquefied natural gas. He mentioned that he plans to meet with possible LNG suppliers in the next few weeks.

The agency reports that Trump's expressed plan to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, and his warnings directed at nations opposing these efforts have led Europe to reassess its relationship with the United States across various areas, such as defense and energy.

Bloomberg notes that the trade deal from last year featured a promise from the EU to buy $750 billion in American energy. The European Union is expanding its energy options by stopping the use of energy supplies from Russia. The European Union still depends on Russia for approximately 15% of its liquefied natural gas supplies, but has recently agreed to gradually stop importing these supplies.
