Over the weekend, Spain and Italy's governments discussed matters with European Commissioner for Home Affairs Magnus Brunner, as reports indicate that Brussels urged both parties to eliminate mutual border checks.
According to Politico, three EU officials linked to the negotiations, who preferred to stay unnamed, indicate that EU representatives are aiming to disrupt online platforms utilized by smugglers to avoid the repetition of such events and to allow Italy to retract its actions, reinstating Schengen regulations without appearing diminished.
